BBC Future Media and Technology focuses on innovative new technology formats. They aim to provide content and navigation on demand and engage in two-way communication with audiences via different devices. FM&T is concerned with the creation and development of services and applications across the BBC.
http.www.bbc.co.uk/mobile is the UK’s most popular mobile content site, attracting more than three million unique users per month.
BBC mobile’s existing travel site only displayed rudimentary road travel updates, and had no searching capabilities. They therefore required an updated mobile travel site that could provide news, information and updates for users across the UK.
To ensure that mobile users could access as much functionality as possible, it was important that two versions of the site be created; one for more recent technology, and another for older mobile phones. The project was assigned a limited budget and timescale, requiring the chosen development team to take a pro-active role in providing technical solutions throughout the project.
A number of technical challenges faced this project, therefore structured documentation and training sessions were organised at the outset to share knowledge and plan for deployment. An in-depth user experience phase was undertaken to ensure that the finished application had the user’s needs at the heart of its design.
Box UK developed a sophisticated Java service that aggregates numerous travel data updates from various sources in various formats into a single, scalable, auto-updating feed. Our team also implemented custom functionality including user preferences, searching and auto-detection of mobile devices, to ensure that the finished site was informative, interactive and user-friendly.
The new BBC mobile travel site provides a wealth of real-time travel information in a clear, accessible format. The user is also provided with the opportunity to personalize the site through the ‘My Journeys’ application. The project has been extremely successful, and the BBC hope to re-use the work undertaken by Box UK in a redevelopment of their main travel site.
