Cross-Site Searching

Organisations with multiple websites can provide users with the ability to search across these sites, even if they reside on different servers or use disparate systems.

Amaxus supports cross-site searching in a number of ways, depending on the installation:

  • Single installation of Amaxus running multiple sites:

A single installation of Amaxus can control multiple sites, running from the same database. The front-end search on each site can be configured to query the content from all sites within the current installation, whilst security privileges can separate and secure content and users within the System.

  • Multiple installations of Amaxus running multiple sites:

Using RDF, cross-site searching mechanisms can be employed to search other websites. Amaxus automatically produces RDF files that describe the resources and metadata available from each server. A central RDF ‘harvester’, or spider, periodically (e.g. every night) downloads the RDF files from each site and caches the results in a central database. This database can then be used to search the content from all sites.

  • Multiple installations of Amaxus and third party CMSs running multiple sites:

The use of RDF files allows future sites to be included, independent of the CMS that is used (providing that each site can produce an RDF file, a W3C standard).
