XML Java Applications

Box UK has a team specialising in the development and deployment of Java Applications, in particular the integration of XML and Java.  Java brings a number of benefits to the field of application development:

  • It is platform independent: the same application can run on any platform with a Java Virtual Machine without modification.  Such platforms include all popular operating systems, web browsers, PDAs and mobile phones.
  • It promotes the development of robust and reliable applications.
  • It is one of the first languages to provide built-in security from the ground-up.
  • It is built on Internet standards and technologies.
  • It enables applications to be automatically downloaded, run and updated from a Web browser.

Recent Java projects undertaken by Box UK include:

Curriculum Online Tagging Tool

The Tagging Tool was initially developed by Box UK for the National Grid for Learning (NGfL). The tool enables information providers to tag their resources against metadata schemas, enabling easy dissemination of content amongst partner sites.

Box UK have recently been commissioned to develop the tool further as part of the government's £50 million Curriculum Online initiative, building in a number of new features:

  • Hierarchical RDF Handling
  • XML/RDF Dual Compatibility
  • Explorer-style GUI element
  • Ability to communicate with the future Curriculum Online web service
  • SSH File Transfer

Project Black Arrow

A standalone Java application was developed for the National Learning Network (NLN). The tool is capable of extracting XML-formatted data from within directories, zip or jar archives, via the use of a wizard-like interface.

The tool produces HTML output tailored to the user-selected specifications, including accessibility options, page colours and navigation icons.

Batch processing of multiple XML inputs/output file destinations is supported.
