PICS

PICS stands for Platform for Internet Content Selection and enables labels to be applied to a website to describe its suitability for particular audiences.

PICS, in conjunction with filtering software, is helpful for controlling what children can access on the internet.

The Box UK site uses labels that allow the levels of the following areas to be specified:  

• Chat
• The language used on the site
• The nudity and sexual content of a site
• The violence depicted on the site
• Others such as gambling, drugs and alcohol.

The ICRA (Internet Content Rating Association) has produced a set of labels that can be used.
