The Welsh Government has reappointed Box UK to develop and support the Cymru Wales brand websites after a competitive re-tender. This is the third consecutive time Box UK has won the contract, continuing work on the estate that began in 2020.

These sites are the Welsh Government’s front door for tourism, study and investment. They have to work in two languages, meet public sector accessibility regulations, and hold up when an international event sends a surge of visitors. That combination is what the contract is really about.

What the contract covers

Box UK provides Drupal development, testing and support across the Cymru Wales estate. This includes Visit Wales and its Welsh-language site Croeso, Wales.com, Study in Wales, Trade & Invest Wales, Creative Wales, Travel Trade, Meet in Wales, and the Visit Wales industry sites.

What the last contract delivered

Since the 2023 award, the work has shifted from keeping the sites running to making them more useful for each visitor.

Box UK worked with Welsh Government and their partners to build a personalised recommendation system for Visit Wales. It uses visitor behaviour data in BigQuery and surfaces suggestions through Drupal components, so editors keep control of the pages. Event page views rose 30% year on year in August 2025, and the system now makes around 43,000 recommendations a month.

The team also built Gwydion, a conversational AI assistant now live on Visit Wales and Croeso. Gwydion answers only from the 15,000+ pages and products in the Cymru Wales CMS, links to its sources, and says when it doesn’t know. Visitors have used it in six languages, and 21% of its recommendations are clicked through.

What this means for other public sector teams

Many public bodies run several sites on Drupal, under the same pressures: bilingual content, accessibility law, unpredictable traffic and limited internal capacity. The Cymru Wales work shows the value of one team that knows the whole estate. New features can be built once, tested on one site and rolled out across the rest, without every improvement becoming a separate project.

We are delighted with this award. The last six years has allowed us to develop a partnership built on trust, transparency and shared expectations, and a team that is intimate with the brand to imagine, alongside Welsh Government, what it can continually do for the people using these sites. The Route Explorer and Gwydion features came out of that thinking, and we are incredibly excited to take our ambitions further still over the next 3 years.”
