Supporting 130,000 global members: How we helped RICS go mobile-first

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors needed to change how 130,000 members record their professional development. The old desktop tools didn’t work for people who spend their days on-site, and they couldn’t keep pace with how fast professional standards were shifting.

We built the mobile app alongside the RICS engineering team, so their knowledge sits inside the product rather than being handed over with it.

Delivered feature parity across iOS and Android

Launched in step with RICS’s 2026 global framework

The challenge: recording that keeps up with the standard

RICS members log their own professional development, and the desktop-only tools made that hard to do in the places they actually work: on-site, at seminars, between jobs. Underneath the inconvenience sat a bigger risk. A professional body’s authority rests on being able to show its members meet the standard the public relies on, and when recording is difficult, that evidence gets patchy. The tools also couldn’t keep up with how fast the standards themselves were changing, around AI, net zero and building safety.

Our approach: one embedded team

This worked because it wasn’t a vendor relationship. We embedded our engineers with the RICS team so their standards expertise shaped the build directly. It also means the RICS team came out of the project able to run and extend the app themselves, rather than depending on us to.

What we built

We focused on the things members would use every day:

  • Record in the moment: a simple tracker that lets members log learning as it happens.
  • Digital ID: a secure way to verify professional status from a phone.
  • Deadline reminders: automatic prompts so members hit their CPD deadlines without chasing them.
  • Cross-platform parity: the same features and performance on Android and iOS, wherever a member is working

As of May 2026, members have already logged over 16,500 CPD activities directly through the app, proving the demand for ‘on-the-go’ recording.

Delivery: building against a moving target

We shipped in step with the 2026 global framework, matching the app to a set of professional requirements that was still being finalised as we built. The shared-team model is why that held: decisions that would normally bounce between client and supplier were made in the room. The same closeness means the RICS team can maintain and grow the app without coming back to us for every change.

The results: better tools for a global community

The app launched on time for the 2026 global framework. What that delivered:

  • Full reach: 130,000+ professionals now have access, with 11,418 unique members already actively engaged.
  • Fair experience: the same features and performance on Apple and Android, with an 80/20 install split.
  • Cleaner compliance: members recording CPD in the moment gives RICS lower-friction, more current evidence that standards are being upheld, which is the thing its authority depends on.

What this means for your organisation

If you run a membership body, the pressure on your digital tools is only going one way. Members expect to do everything from their phone. Regulators expect faster, cleaner evidence that standards are being upheld. And the standards themselves keep shifting, around AI, sustainability, safety, ethics. The systems built five or ten years ago to handle CPD, certification, or compliance weren’t designed for any of that.

The question isn’t whether to modernise. It’s how to do it without losing institutional knowledge in the handover, and without building something that’s already outdated by the time it ships.
