As part of their commitment to supporting the local web community, digital specialists Box UK recently organised a “For the Social Good” Hack Day, which took place on 20th November at Cardiff University Students’ Union. The event invited developers, designers and anyone with an interest in software to work in teams to build web services that would benefit their local area.

Social interest

The theme of social interest apps was chosen to inspire competitors to give back to society, building on the culture of sharing and innovation seen in the technological community and deeply valued by Box UK. Teams were encouraged to interpret this brief as they wished, with no restrictions placed on the tools, languages or techniques that could be used.

The results of the event were judged by Carey Hiles, Box UK’s Product Development Manager, John Greenaway, Web Application Manager at Cardiff University, and Jenni Taylor, Web Content Editor at the University of Bath. The panel looked at both the skill and innovation demonstrated by each team in developing their service, along with its potential to serve the community.

Winning applications

First prize was given to Gritly, a service which uses weather updates and location-based tweets to produce a map showing local snow and ice danger spots. Second place went to Noteslide, an online noticeboard allowing university students to get an at-a-glance look at relevant news and updates. A special award was also presented to the best individual coder of the day, Tom Hancocks, who worked on an ‘Ask a local’ service allowing users to post questions about an area and receive real-time answers.

Speaking about the event Carey Hiles said, “The enthusiastic response we’ve seen to the Hack Day has been fantastic, and I’ve been incredibly impressed with the high quality of the work produced. We have a great tech community here in Cardiff, and this event has really helped us build upon this, engaging with some of the emerging talent out there. I’d like to congratulate our winners, and everyone who contributed to the success of the day.”
